Click here to see the competition details and entry form for 2009. We have made the process as simple as possible to encourage student nominations. The competition was officially launched at the GTASA Conference in June, 2007 by our Keynote speaker, Simon Nasht, the author of the biography of Sir Hubert Wilkins titled; 'The last Explorer'.
Winners of the 2008 competition were announced at the 2009 GTASA conference.
2. The 2009 Eden Prize ( A DECS and GTASA initiative)
The Eden Prize is being conducted in 2009 by the GTASA in collaboration with the Department of Education and Children's Services’. This competition is a great opportunity for Year 10 students in DECS schools to enter a competition and showcase their communication and geographical skills. As the attached information sheet shows, the competition has some great prizes and will really challenge students to think about haw we can make the world more sustainable for future generations. Australian wide competitions
There are several competitions for Australian Geography students to enter.
Various geographical associations & organisation's competitions are:
The National Geography Competition (open to secondary students around Australia)
Entries from South Australian students are invited for the National Geographic Channel Australian Geographic Competition.
This Australian Geography Teachers Association supported competition is a multiple-choice competition for school students.
The National Geographic Channel Australian Geography Competition gives you the opportunity to put geography in the spotlight at your school, and to reward student excellence.
It's straight-forward to run. You send in the application form; we send a question booklet and answer sheet for each student; you administer the test (it fits into a normal class period) and return the answers; we mark it and send back the results.
Students are graded in three age groups - 13 and younger; 14 and 15; 16 and older.
All students get results and certificates - high distinction, distinction, credit or participation. Students under 16 years old can win books, money, a fun weekend in Sydney for their Final and a trip to the 2009 National Geographic World Championship (maybe in Russia). Students 16 and over can win books and medals, a place at Geography's Big Week Out in Noosa, and selection into Australia's team to the 2009 Asia-Pacific Regional Geography Olympiad in Japan.
Full details are sent to all secondary schools in January. If you can't locate your school's copy at the beginning of Term 1, download the information from our website or contact us for another copy. Primary schools are also invited to enter the junior level. Primary teachers should contact us for more information.
