Content
There are four main sections in the Heinemann Atlas Geography Skills book: Key mapping and atlas skills; Fieldwork and photography; Different types of maps; Graphics for Geography. The sections introduce major skills used in geography, and with atlases.
Each section has various units, with each unit covering a specific skill. Each new unit begins with a short description of the particular skill being taught (e.g. what are satellite images and why they are used) followed by an explanation of how (e.g. how to interpret satellite images or how to construct a climograph).
The two sections on mapping skills are very good. The book starts with basic mapping skills such as symbols, direction and scale. In a later section it expands into more specific maps, such as land use, weather, climate and so forth.
Learning Activities
Each unit concludes with a set of activities. Most of the units incorporate the Heinemann Atlas into the activities. The activities are interesting and practical, and expand upon the vast range of skills introduced in the book.
Layout/Format
Each unit is over a double-page spread making it easy to read and follow. There are full colour diagrams and photographs incorporated throughout the 92 page paperback.
General Comments
The Heinemann Atlas Geography Skills is a very useful text for students skill development. There is an appropriate mix of Australian and world focus in the application of the skills. While the book is a very good independent resource, it is best used in conjunction with the Heinemann Atlas.
It is most suitable for students in Years 7 - 10.
